L08 – "How do I follow Jesus, He's not Here?"
[15] "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
[16] "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
[17] that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
[18] "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
[12] "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
[13] "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
[14] "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.
[15] "All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
God has revealed Himself to us in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As we read the Old Testament, we don't really hear Our Heavenly Father referred to as Father. He revealed Himself as God, Jehovah, Yahweh, I Am that I Am, etc. We really began to know Him as Father when Jesus came. ( Joh_14:7-11 ) Now we can know Him as Father because Jesus has made the way available for us to live in Fellowship with Him as His children. ( Joh_14:6 ; Joh_20:17 )
The Father and Jesus are together in Heaven but they are both committed to being with us in the person of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was our example of this. In His dialog with Philip over meeting the Father He said if we see Him we have seen the Father. ( Joh_14:7-11 ) Then Jesus told them all that He and the Father would abide in us via the Holy Spirit ( Joh_14:19-31 ).
Following Jesus after He has gone back to Heaven is a little different than it would be with Him here. However, He said that it would actually be better for us if He went back to the Father and that we would continue to do His works and even greater ones because He did. ( Joh_14:12 ; Joh_16:4-11 )
We know, by the Words of Jesus, that the Father and Jesus are both committed to coming to us in the person of the Holy Spirit. When we make our peace with God through Jesus, the Holy Spirit does come into us and dwells within us and our spirit is alive again. ( Rom_8:9-11 ; Eze_11:19-20 ; Joh_3:6 ; 1Co_3:16-17 ; 1Co_6:19-20 ; 2Co_6:14-18 ; Gal_4:4-7 ; Eph_1:13-14 ; Eph_1:15-21 ; 2Ti_1:14 ; 1Jo_3:24 )
