L02 – "Disciple?"
[4] [The Servant of God says] The Lord God has given Me the tongue of a disciple and of one who is taught, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He wakens Me morning by morning, He wakens My ear to hear as a disciple [as one who is taught].
[5] The Lord God has opened My ear, and I have not been rebellious or turned backward.
This scripture taken from Isaiah was referring to Jesus as He would be in His future coming to earth. It describes the attitude of His mind and the state of His heart. This state of mind and attitude of heart is the one that He wants us to have in being like Him.
Disciple:
What is it? What does it mean?
The word used for disciple in the new testament is "Mathetes", which is a learner, a pupil. It is from the verb "Mathano", to learn, to understand.
Jesus gave a command to the disciples at His departure to:
[19] "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
[20] teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
The word "Matheteuo" translated "make disciples" in verse 19 means much more than, “make learners out of them”, as it is illustrated in His next statement "...teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you..."
It carries with it the understanding that they were to make us followers, who, after having learned from them, would carry out that which we have learned and in turn make disciples and followers of others.
All of us becoming learners and followers and maintaining that position, while making learners and followers out of all others who would believe in Him through His message through us.
Being a disciple means more than following Jesus to be a learner. It means continually following Jesus. Being learners who take what we have learned and apply it in our everyday lives, to the end that we will be like Him, fulfilling Father's Will. ( Joh_15:10 )
“...follow me and I will make you...”
